Full Text of Announcement:

As part of the UNIX 98 program, The Open Group is pleased to announce introduction of a new Product Standard (formerly Profile and Component definition) known as the UNIX 98 Server, which demonstrates to the marketplace that UNIX systems are well-suited and ready to be used as standardized Internet Servers.

This new UNIX 98 Server Product Standard joins the previously announced UNIX 98 Product Standards: UNIX 98 (the base product standard) and UNIX 98 Workstation (the base product standard plus graphical user interface).

This Product Standard defines a set of services in support of Internet and intranet technologies. This includes support of network computer devices and the presence of mandatory Java Runtime Environment. The Internet Server Product Standard complements the Network Computer Profile providing the server side of that definition. The emphasis is towards services and applications support. A standard server will provide a set of core services to support Internet applications. The mandatory functionality includes: the Internet Protocol Suite, Java Runtime Environment and Internet capabilities to support network computer clients.

This product standard can be accessed on the World Wide Web at http://www.opengroup.org/prodstandards.
